What started as a college learning experience quickly led to a career path for Chesney Benge. While pursuing an associate’s degree in medical billing and coding, she was required to undertake an externship in that field. Shorter than an internship, this provides students the chance to shadow professionals in their desired career. Chesney was almost sent to a medical facility in downtown Indianapolis, but fate brought her to Indiana Eye Clinic instead.
Chesney started as an extern in October of 2017 and became a full-time staff member two months later, taking on the role of account services representative.
“My role when I started was obtaining pre-certifications for surgeries, and from that point I wanted to learn more tasks and widen my experience in the medical billing field,” she said. “So when I had the opportunity to add more tasks to my plate, I happily took the responsibility.”
In her current role, Chesney serves as a liaison between patients and insurance providers, ensuring the best coverage and prices for all vision needs. She is in charge of gathering and organizing all payments.
“I’ve always loved data entry and dealing with numbers, so this is the perfect job for me,” Chesney said.
Her favorite part of working at IEC though is the group of people she gets to interact with every day.
“We are one big family and will help anyone without hesitation,” she said. “The patients are so kind as well, and we form strong bonds with them.”
Chesney’s “family-oriented nature” drove her to succeed in this field.
“My father passed away in August of 2014, so I wanted to make him proud by graduating high school and college, getting a steady career, and just being the best person I can be,” she said.
Outside of work, Chesney cherishes time with family, her boyfriend and all of their friends. She takes after her mother with her love of line dancing.
Chesney is grateful to have a job she loves as much as her family and friends.
